marquee waterplay park
[Marquee Waterplay Park]
Located in South Hedland, the Marquee Waterpark has been designed in close consultation with the client to provide a park that is owned, honoured and loved by its community. Incorporated sustainable principles include prefabricated building systems. This offers the integration of several environmentally sustainable approaches; automated manufacturing, integrated building services, modular flexibility, quick assembly and affordability as well as the reduction of waste and consumed energy in construction, delivery and assembly in remote regional areas.
Using passive thermal design principles, appropriate to the arid tropical region, the building forms consist of prefabricated ‘boxes’ to accommodate the caretaker’s residence, office, kiosk and ablutions. ‘Parasol’ type roofs float over the top of the buildings to provide shade and protection from the elements.
Shade structures have been scattered throughout the park in consideration of building and activity locations. The elongated, tilting legs of the structures are a reference to the district’s mangroves while the juxtaposition and layering of different roof sheetings and forms provide dappled shade with a play of light and shadow. Shaded areas capture breezes, providing opportunities for gathering and interaction in the open air with the interaction between landscape and building.
During the three years 2010-2012 I was involved in this project including the stages of schematic design, design development and documentation.
